Training needs analysis

A disciplined diagnosis of where performance is actually breaking down, and an honest answer about whether training is the right intervention at all.

Why it matters

The problem this solves.

Training is frequently the default response to a problem it cannot solve. Needs analysis is the step that prevents an expensive answer to the wrong question.

Not every performance gap is a training gap

Unclear expectations, broken process, missing tools, and misaligned incentives all look like skill gaps from a distance. Training cannot fix any of them.

Requests describe symptoms, not causes

Stakeholders ask for the solution they can picture. Analysis works back from the symptom to the cause, which is frequently somewhere other than where the request originated.

It is the cheapest step that protects the largest spend

A few weeks of analysis routinely redirects or prevents program investments an order of magnitude larger.

What the work involves

How we approach it.

Engagements are scoped to your context. These are the components we draw from, sequenced to fit the decision you are trying to make.

  1. Performance gap definition

We establish what current performance is, what it needs to be, and what the gap is costing—in numbers where the data supports it.

  2. Root cause analysis

Structured diagnosis separating skill and knowledge gaps from process, tooling, expectation, and incentive problems.

  3. Stakeholder and workforce input

Interviews, focus groups, observation, and surveys across levels, so the analysis reflects the work as done rather than as documented.

  4. Existing data review

Performance data, quality metrics, engagement results, and exit data—examined before we ask anyone to fill out a new survey.

  5. Prioritized recommendations

A ranked set of interventions with expected impact, effort, and explicit notes on which gaps training should not be asked to close.

Example project

What a project could deliver.

The situation

A customer service organization is missing quality targets. Leadership has requested a communication skills training program for the entire front-line team.

The outcome

The organization learns that most of the shortfall traces to an unclear escalation policy and a slow knowledge base and invests in a focused program for the narrower set of real skill gaps.

What you receive

  • A quantified performance gap analysis against quality and resolution targets
  • Root cause findings from 20 interviews, 4 focus groups, and call observation
  • Analysis of existing quality scores, tenure data, and escalation patterns
  • A cause-by-intervention matrix separating skill gaps from process and tooling gaps
  • A prioritized recommendation set with impact, effort, and sequencing
  • A targeted training scope for the gaps training can genuinely close

This is an illustrative scope, not a fixed package. Actual deliverables are defined with you during scoping.

Let's scope the right first step.
